What is DPC (damp proof course).
In civil engineering, DPC stands for Damp Proof Course, which refers to a barrier or layer of material incorporated into building construction to prevent the upward or lateral movement of moisture through walls, floors, or other structural components. It is a critical element in ensuring the durability and health of a structure by protecting it from issues caused by dampness, such as mold growth, decay, efflorescence, and structural weakening.
The DPC is typically installed at a specific height above ground level, usually at the base of walls, and it is made of materials resistant to moisture penetration, such as bituminous membranes, polyethylene sheets, slate, cement mortar with waterproofing compounds, or other synthetic materials.

In civil engineering, the following materials are commonly used for Damp Proof Course (DPC) to prevent moisture rising through walls and floors:

- Brick or Stone: In older construction practices, a layer of bricks or stones is laid horizontally in the wall as a physical barrier to moisture.
- Plastic Membranes: Other plastic-based materials, such as polystyrene or PVC, are sometimes used for their flexibility and moisture resistance.
- Lead Sheets: In some cases, lead sheets are used as DPC due to their long-lasting impermeability to moisture.
- Metallic Sheets (Aluminum or Copper): In certain situations, metallic sheets like aluminum or copper can be used as a waterproof barrier.
Why DPC provided in building.
Damp Proof Course (DPC) is provided in buildings for the following reasons:
- Prevents Rising Damp: DPC stops moisture from rising through the walls, which could cause damage to the structure and interior finishes.
- Protects Foundation: It shields the foundation from water penetration, preserving the integrity of the building's base.
- Improves Durability: DPC helps in enhancing the durability of the walls, preventing decay or corrosion due to moisture.
